Why downloaded Reddit videos have no sound

If you've ever used a Reddit video downloader and ended up with a silent clip, you're not doing anything wrong. This is how Reddit's video system works by design, not a bug in the tool you used.

Reddit stores video and audio as two separate files

When someone uploads a video directly to Reddit, it's hosted on Reddit's v.redd.it servers using a streaming format called DASH. Under DASH, the video track and the audio track are two independent files, streamed and recombined by the video player in your browser on the fly.

A basic Reddit video downloader that grabs the "fallback URL" for a post is pulling only the video stream, since that's the file Reddit's own API exposes most directly. The audio file lives at a separate address that isn't included in the same response.

Why not just combine them automatically?

Merging separate video and audio streams into one file requires a video processing step (typically using a tool called FFmpeg) that runs on a server. Many free, fast, ad-light downloader tools — including the current version of this one — skip that step to stay instant and lightweight. Adding a full server-side video encoder increases cost and slows down every single download, even for the videos that never had audio to begin with, like GIFs.

What are your options right now?

If a specific Reddit video needs audio, your most reliable option today is to play it directly on Reddit (in-browser or in the app) and use your device's built-in screen recording feature, which captures both video and audio exactly as played.

We're aware audio matters and it's on the roadmap for this Reddit video downloader as an upcoming feature.
